Managing Holiday Stress with Menopause in Mind

Menopause can be pretty challenging without the added stress of the holidays!

The holidays can be a super fun and magical time, but for women navigating menopause (like me!), this season might come with a unique set of challenges...think hot flashes during dinner, anxiety about travelling, and the stress about being around that family member who just annoys you for some unknown reason.

From energy fluctuations and mood swings to hot flashes and sleep disruptions, menopause can amplify the stress that already comes with the holidays and vice versa!

But with a few creative strategies, you can not only manage the chaos but truly enjoy the season too!

Here are 6 innovative ways to stay grounded, balanced, and joyful during this busy time…yes you can!

Pre-Plan an “Escape Activity”

When menopause symptoms like fatigue or irritability strike, having a go-to activity to reset can be a game-changer.

Pre-plan something that helps you recharge when stress or other menopause symptoms flare.

Maybe it’s a brisk solo walk in the fresh air to regulate your mood, a calming yoga session tailored to ease hot flashes, 10 deep breaths, or even 20 guilt-free minutes of doing nothing under a cozy blanket.

Treat this reset activity like a prescription for your well-being, without feeling guilty (very important)!

You don’t have to explain anything to anyone, just do it!

Outsource One Task

Menopause fatigue is real, and trying to power through endless holiday to-do lists probably isn’t the best idea.

This year, give yourself permission to delegate.

Whether it’s hiring someone to clean the house, letting a store handle gift wrapping, or asking a friend or partner to help with cooking, outsourcing even one task can keep you from going crazy!

Remember, you’re not just crossing off a chore—you’re creating space for yourself to rest and recover.

Set Holiday “Office Hours”

Emotional ups and downs are a common menopausal symptom, and constant interruptions can add to the overwhelm.

Protect your time and energy by setting holiday “office hours.”

Let family and friends know when you’re available for planning calls, visits, or chats—and when you’re not.

Use the off-hours for quiet time, a soothing bath, or restorative practices like meditation or yoga.

Setting boundaries isn’t selfish; it’s self-preservation.

DIY Stress-Relief Kit

A menopause-friendly stress kit can help you navigate moments when you feel overstimulated or overwhelmed.

Fill a small bag with calming items, such as:

  • Cooling face mist to tackle hot flashes on the go.

  • Lavender oil for quick aromatherapy relief.

  • A stress ball to help ease tension.

  • A small book of affirmations to ground you in positivity.

  • A healthy snack (I love my homemade granola and trail mix).

Having this kit handy means you’re always prepared for those unexpected “I need a break” moments.

Give Yourself The “Gift of Saying No”

Holiday expectations can feel even heavier when menopause makes you more sensitive to stress or low on energy.

This season, wrap yourself a symbolic gift: a note that says, “Permission to say no.”

Write it on a sticky note and post it on your bathroom mirror!

Whether it’s skipping an event, saying no to extra baking duties, or opting out of a gift exchange, prioritize what truly matters to you.

Letting go of “shoulds” can free you to focus on the activities and people that bring you joy.

Turn Mundane Tasks into Mini-rituals

Menopause brain fog can make mundane tasks feel super annoying and overwhelming.

Turn them into moments of mindfulness or fun instead.

For example:

  • Wrap gifts while sipping peppermint tea and listening to a soothing playlist.

  • Bake cookies/cook a holiday dish with a friend while sharing laughs (and delegating cleanup!).

  • Dance to holiday tunes while decorating to lift your mood.

By adding these small joys, even the most tedious chores can feel lighter and more enjoyable.

Navigating the holidays while managing menopause symptoms isn’t always easy, but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming.

By embracing these strategies—whether it’s pre-planning a reset, outsourcing tasks, or giving yourself the gift of saying no—you can honor your body’s needs and still enjoy the season.

This holiday, let go of perfection, embrace balance, and prioritize your well-being.

Because the best gift you can give yourself is the one that helps you thrive. 🌟
