Can Yoga Help You Lose Weight?

I’m A Woman Over 40. Will yoga help me to lose weight?

I get that question a lot especially from women over 40 looking to lose weight.

The answer is it depends. 😊

So many women over 40 are struggling to lose weight and I know it's not easy having been there myself.

Hormonal changes which happen during menopause can make losing weight even more challenging once you hit 40 and up.

Here's my take on how yoga can fit into your weight loss journey.

Here are three ways that yoga can help women over 40 lose weight

Increased Physical Activity: While yoga may not burn calories as quickly as other high-intensity workouts, it still involves physically moving your body which can help women over 40 lose weight.

An intense yoga flow class can be quite effective at burning calories although all yoga classes involve some movement.

Additionally, yoga poses and flows also improve flexibility and muscle strength.

Over time, this increased physical activity can help you burn more calories, aiding in weight loss.

Stress Reduction: Many women struggle with emotional or stress-related eating, which can lead to weight gain.

Yoga promotes relaxation and stress reduction through deep breathing and mindfulness techniques.

By managing stress, you can be less prone to turning to comfort foods, which can help in weight loss and help you maintain a healthier weight.

Mindful Eating: Practicing mindfulness is a key part of yoga.

By becoming more aware of your body and its sensations, you can also become more attuned to your eating habits.

This can lead to better portion control, reduced emotional eating, and an overall healthier relationship with food, supporting your weight loss goals and long-term weight management.

To sum up, while yoga can be a valuable component of a weight loss plan for women, your diet (what you eat) and your overall lifestyle choices play a crucial role in achieving and maintaining a healthy weight.

A holistic approach that combines regular physical activity, a balanced diet, and stress management is generally an effective way to achieve weight loss goals.
